Understanding Mental Block
The Yips
The Yips are sudden mental blocks that derail athletic performance, but with specialized mental performance coaching, athletes can overcome the yips and regain confidence and consistency.
If you’ve suddenly lost the ability to perform a skill that used to be second nature – like a golfer who can’t sink an easy putt or a baseball player struggling with routine throws – you might be experiencing the yips. The yips are often defined as a “psycho-neuromuscular impediment” that interferes with the execution of fine motor skills in sports. In simpler terms, it’s a mysterious glitch where your mind and muscles won’t cooperate under pressure. The term originated in golf, but athletes in many sports can suffer from the yips – from pitchers and catchers in baseball, to bowlers, archers, and even tennis players. It can strike suddenly and be deeply frustrating and demoralizing.
DO YOU HAVE THESE CHALLENGES?
Frequent involuntary muscle spasms or tremors during precise actions
Sudden loss of automatic muscle control in crucial moments
Overthinking causes focus and coordination breakdown
Emotional distress, frustration, or embarrassment
Performance anxiety and overuse-related neurological issues may both play a role
What causes “The Yips” ?
Experts now believe it can stem from a combination of factors:
Neurological Factors
In some cases the yips are linked to a focal dystonia – a neurological condition causing involuntary muscle spasms or “freezing” during a specific action. This is why the yips often manifest in precise movements like putts or throws.
Performance Anxiety
Often, intense anxiety and fear of failure under pressure play a major role. The more an athlete worries about the outcome or overthinks the movement, the more likely the motion is to misfire. In fact, anxiety can exacerbate neurological tendencies, creating a vicious cycle.
A Mix of Both
Most commonly, the yips are now seen as having both mind and body components. Stress and mental pressure can worsen the physical symptoms. That’s why two athletes might experience “the yips” for different underlying reasons – one primarily physical, another mostly psychological, or a bit of both.
No matter the exact cause in your case, the good news is that the yips are not a permanent curse. They can be overcome, especially by addressing the mental side of the equation. While changing equipment or technique (like a new putter grip in golf) can sometimes help the physical aspect, it’s crucial to tackle the mental patterns of anxiety and overthinking that often underpin the yips.
How Our Coaching Can Help You Overcome The Yips
At Rooted Sport Psychology Coaching, we approach the yips as a challenge that can be beaten with patience, the right strategies, and a supportive mindset.
Through these steps, athletes often find that the yips gradually lose their grip. You start to string together successes – maybe small at first – which rebuild trust in your skill. Our coaching celebrates those wins and helps you snowball them into lasting improvement.
Our one-on-one mental performance coaching for the yips focuses on:
01
Anxiety Reduction Techniques
Because performance anxiety is frequently at the heart of the yips, we teach you proven methods to stay calm under pressure. This includes deep breathing exercises, progressive muscle relaxation, and mindfulness practices you can use during competition. By lowering the overall anxiety, we often see the yips symptoms start to diminish.
02
Reframing Thoughts & Confidence Building
The yips thrive on fear – fear of embarrassment, letting others down, or repeating the mistake. We help you break this fear cycle by reframing negative thoughts. Through cognitive-behavioral techniques and positive self-talk, you’ll learn to replace “What if I mess up again?” with empowering thoughts like “I’ve done this hundreds of times in practice – I’ve got this.” Rebuilding confidence is key to loosening the mental shackles of the yips.
03
Focus and Routine
Many athletes with the yips benefit from shifting their focus away from the outcome or fine details of movement. We might train you to adopt an external focus (for example, focusing on a target or rhythm rather than on your arm motion) to prevent overthinking. We also develop pre-shot or pre-throw routines that ground you in the present moment. A consistent routine gives your mind something positive to follow, reducing the chances of intrusive thoughts interfering.
04
Gradual Exposure to Pressure
If the yips tend to appear in high-pressure situations, we’ll gradually simulate pressure in practice. With your coach or parent’s help, you can practice your skill in increasingly challenging conditions – for instance, making ten putts in a row while recreating tournament conditions – combined with the relaxation and focus techniques we’ve taught. This builds your tolerance and shows your mind that you can perform even when it counts.
05
Collaborating on Technical Adjustments
We’re mental performance specialists, so our main role is optimizing your mindset. However, we understand that sometimes a small technical change can alleviate the dystonia aspect of the yips. We’re happy to work in tandem with your sports coach (if you have one) to integrate mental and physical adjustments seamlessly. For example, once you adopt a new grip or technique recommended by your swing coach, we’ll help you mentally reinforce that change with visualization and belief so it sticks under pressure.
Getting Back In The Zone
Overcoming the yips is not an overnight process, but with dedication, it is absolutely possible. We have worked with athletes who thought they might never throw, shoot, or putt normally again – and watched them return to form and even exceed their past performance. The key is addressing the mental roadblocks: the fear, the tension, the loss of confidence. When you conquer those, your natural ability can shine again.
Our Yips coaching program is available to athletes in South Florida and beyond. If you’re in the Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Davie, or Pembroke Pines areas, we can meet with you in person to work through your specific situation. Not local? We routinely coach athletes online from all over the country who are battling the yips. The remote sessions are just as effective – sometimes even freeing, as you can practice techniques in your own familiar environment.
You don’t have to suffer the yips in silence or think about quitting your sport. By taking a proactive step and working with a sport psychology professional, you’re giving yourself the best chance to beat this hurdle. Many athletes have overcome the yips by learning mental strategies that reduce anxiety and change their approach. With our guidance, you’ll develop a toolkit to handle those critical moments differently. Instead of dreading that next shot or throw, you’ll approach it with calm confidence and a clear mind.
Take Control of Your Game Again
The yips might be notorious, but they are not invincible. With patient coaching and the right mindset, you can retrain your brain and body to perform freely once more. Imagine stepping onto the course or field without that lingering dread – and knowing you have the mental skills to stay composed. We’re here to help you reach that point.
If your struggle with the yips is part of a broader issue with performance anxiety, you may also find our Performance Anxiety Coaching page helpful, as it addresses general strategies for fear and nerves in competition. And as always, our approach is one-on-one and confidential – we understand how sensitive this issue can be.
Don’t let the yips define your athletic story. With the right support, you can overcome this mental block and get back to enjoying the sport you love, performing at your best when it matters most.
